Basic Electricity & Residential Wiring Fundamentals
Learn Basic Electricity and Residential Wiring Concepts
This 40 hour course is designed for novice and entry-level technicians who have little or no experience or training in electricity or electronics. Students gain entry-level fundamental knowledge in D.C. and A.C. electronics and basic residential electrical power systems. This course reviews fundamentals of series and parallel circuit theory; introduces Ohm’s Law relationships between voltage, current, resistance and power; teaches identification and characteristics of A.C. and D.C. signals; and teaches identification of common circuit component symbols and functions. Students also gain introductory knowledge of residential A.C. wiring terminology, major components, and wiring codes and safety considerations. Pre-course knowledge of the math concepts used with series/parallel and Ohm’s Law calculations is highly recommended. This course satisfies knowledge and skills requirements needed to pass entry-level digital technologies and electricity and electronics tests. We also recommend the knowledge base from this course as a path towards a course of study in entry-level Photovoltaic and Small Wind energy technologies. Students who complete this course will receive a Certificate of Training from MiraCosta College.
